Formative Studies & Early Explorations

Born Joshua Alexander Cooper, OD (1934–2020), was one of Jamaica’s most prolific and versatile visual artists. Over the course of more than five decades, he portrayed the island through its people, landscapes, architecture, history, and everyday life.

Guided by a deep appreciation for classical techniques, Cooper meticulously studied the masters, developing a unique approach to texture and composition. This period was marked by intense experimentation and a relentless pursuit of visual truth, setting the stage for his later iconic series.

One of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a Jamaican citizen is the Order of Distinction, Officer Class (OD). The Order of Distinction in Jamaica is broadly comparable to the Presidential Medal of Freedom in the United States, and Order of the British Empire (OBE), in Britain. They represent high civilian honors recognizing exceptional service and contributions to national life in their perspective country. In 2016, the Government of Jamaica conferred on Alexander the Order of Distinction, Officer Class, for his distinguished contribution to Jamaica’s visual arts and cultural heritage. The honor recognized a lifetime spent observing, interpreting and preserving the nation’s cultural life.

Early Life and Formation

Born in Enfield, St. Mary, in 1934, Alexander showed artistic ability as a child. Teachers encouraged him to illustrate Bible stories, experiences that helped turn a natural gift into a lifelong vocation. A government scholarship took him to the Jamaica School of Art. He later continued his development in New York at the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts, where disciplined study strengthened his approach to drawing, composition and the human figure. Alexander credited Jamaican artists Albert Huie and Ralph Campbell as important influences. Ralph Campbell, his tutor at the Jamaica School of Art helped him understand how images could be developed through paint. At the Art Students League, American painter Robert Brackman helped refine Cooper’s figure painting. After returning to Jamaica, Alexander taught at Kingston College and the Jamaica School of Art. Teaching allowed him to give back to the community by placing his efforts into helping young students advance themselves and also assisting the community elders with their daily living.
