His Legacy Lives On

Alexander Cooper, OD was more than a painter. He was an educator, cultural observer, storyteller and visual historian. Through his work, viewers encounter Jamaica’s humor, dignity, beauty, history and humanity. His paintings were collected and admired in Jamaica and internationally. His work attracted prominent collectors including Sidney Poitier, Ruby Dee, Angela Bassett and government offices and hotels have also privately commissioned Alexander’s work, which can be seen all over the island. Cooper helped introduce audiences outside Jamaica to the country’s people, history, architecture, and culture. Yet his legacy extends beyond exhibitions, collections and awards. Across decades of experimentation, Cooper moved among abstraction, expressionism, portraiture, realism, landscape and genre painting without losing a distinct artistic identity. Most importantly, he remained deeply connected to Jamaica.
